Reencle Home Composter, 14L XL Family Size (microbial, real compost)

Most electric composters dry and grind food waste into a smaller, drier version of itself — useful, but not actually compost. The Reencle takes a different approach: it uses natural microbes to genuinely decompose scraps, breaking them down into a soil-like base within 24 hours through real biological decomposition, the same process that happens in a traditional outdoor compost heap, just accelerated and contained indoors.

That microbial process needs a short curing period afterward — around three weeks — to mature into finished, nutrient-rich compost your plants will actually respond to. It is a genuinely different output from a same-day dried pre-compost, and it is the reason to choose the Reencle over a faster grind-and-dry unit if what you want at the end is compost you can use directly, not a material that still needs further processing.

At 14L, it is sized for a genuinely large family or a household that wants to process the bulk of its food waste rather than a supplementary amount, handling up to 1kg of scraps daily. A 3-layer activated carbon filtration system keeps it odour-free enough to live on the counter rather than being hidden away, and at 28dB it is close to silent — quieter than most refrigerators.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the output really finished compost, or does it need more processing?

It is genuine compost. The Reencle uses live microbes to biologically decompose scraps within 24 hours, then a roughly three-week curing period matures it into nutrient-rich, plant-ready compost you can use directly, unlike dried pre-compost from grind-and-dry units.

How much can it process per day?

Up to 1kg of food scraps daily, including fruit, vegetables, dairy and leftovers, making it suited to larger households wanting to process the bulk of their food waste.

How loud is it?

Just 28dB — quieter than a whisper — designed to run in open-plan kitchens, utility rooms or flats without disturbing anyone.

What comes in the box?

The composter arrives with a carbon filter, a compost starter pack (to seed the microbial culture) and a shovel, so it can be set up and used immediately.

Does it smell?

A 3-layer activated carbon filtration system traps smells at the source, keeping it odour-free enough to sit permanently on the counter rather than being hidden under the sink.

Can I return it if it does not suit my kitchen?

Yes — return it unused, with packaging where possible, under our returns policy for an exchange or refund.

Real microbial compost vs dehydrated pre-compost: what’s the actual difference

4 min read EcoGrind

"Composter" gets used for two genuinely different kinds of appliance, and knowing which one you're buying changes what you get at the end.

Two different processes, two different outputs

Most electric composters, including several others in this range, work by drying and grinding: high heat removes moisture, blades reduce volume, and the result is a dry, shrunk version of your food scraps — useful as a soil amendment mixed in at a low ratio, but not compost in the traditional sense, because nothing has actually decomposed. The Reencle works differently: it seeds each load with live microbes that biologically break the material down, the same fundamental process as a traditional outdoor compost heap, just contained and accelerated. After 24 hours of active processing and roughly three weeks of curing, what comes out the other end is genuine, finished compost.

Why this distinction matters for how you use it

Dried pre-compost from a grind-and-dry unit needs to be mixed into existing soil or an outdoor compost pile at a low ratio (roughly 1:10) because it is still raw, dehydrated organic material that would otherwise draw moisture from surrounding soil or burn young roots if applied directly. Finished microbial compost from the Reencle can go straight into planters and garden beds in the same way you'd use bagged compost from a garden centre, because the decomposition that makes compost safe and beneficial for plants has already happened.

What that trade-off costs you

The trade-off is time and a bit of patience: a 24-hour Reencle cycle plus a three-week cure is slower to a usable end product than a same-day dried cycle from a grind-and-dry machine, even though the Reencle's daily processing (up to 1kg) happens continuously in the background. If you want fast turnover and don't mind mixing the output into soil yourself, a drying unit is the quicker route. If you want to end up with compost you can use exactly like a bag from the garden centre, the microbial route is the one that actually gets you there.

Living with a microbial composter day to day

Because the process is biological rather than purely mechanical, keeping the microbial culture healthy matters — avoid dumping in anything that would harm the microbes (excessive salt, oil, or chemical residues) and follow the included starter pack instructions when first setting it up. The 3-layer carbon filtration and 28dB operation mean this is designed to be a genuinely permanent kitchen fixture rather than something to run occasionally and tuck away.
